What is Flouride?
What is Fluoride? Fluoride is not an element. It is actually an ion of an element, fluorine! Most of us know fluoride as being in toothpaste. What many don’t know is that it is also in the water that we drink. That actually has a very interesting story. Fluoride was found when a dental school graduate opened a practice in a town in Colorado. When he first got there he noticed that many people had brown stains on their teeth. When he looked into the matter he found that their teeth were alarmingly resistant to decay. Decades later it was discovered that the town’s water actually had a high level of Fluoride, and that that was the cause of the stains and the good prevention. Now, when we put it in water we add it at such a low level that we still get the prevention of decay, but without the brown stains.
Some people disagree with the use of fluoridating water because there have been studies that have shown that you are more likely to have hip fractures, birth defects, cancer, arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, and more. Even the lowering of a person’s IQ can sometimes be an effect! There are also other minor side effects such as upset stomach, headaches weakness. I think that the most alarming out of all would have to be the lowering of someone’s IQ. This is mind baffling to me because I don’t understand how something that you drink can affect your mind and how you think. Another reason why this is so alarming is because I have never heard or seen it used as a side effect for anything.
I agree with the people that don’t agree with fluorinating water because I think that there are more dangers of having fluoridated water, than there are benefits. It just seems crazy that you could ever risk all of that just for good teeth. It seems to me that it is sort of like your teeth, or your life.
There are three main decay-preventing compounds. These are stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate. Ozark Fluorine Specialties make all three of these compounds. They are located in Tulsa Oklahoma. The compounds are technological advances that were formed before it was put into toothpaste.
Above I have stated many facts, and some of my opinions about fluorine. I encourage you to comment with any suggestions or responses that you might have. In conclusion, I have one question: Are you willing to take the risk of drinking fluorinated water for having good prevention against tooth decay.
